You can sleep to health
I am no expert and I talk only of my beliefs and hearsays on sleep. Besides, I always run a current account at my sleep bank in overdraft, technically my sleep backlog, which I always wish square off once in a while. The backlog accumulates over time when I am awake overtime. That happens only when I had to go to the airport or railway stations to receive or see off my family guests.
How much sleep does one require? Some say it is between 6 and 8 hours during the day or night (include those on night shifts). Then one may ask is it not about half of our life, excluding our travel to work and back. Yes I think so. I hear one housewife complaining against her husband, that he sleeps like a baby. Talking of babies, by their 12th month they sleep for 12 to 14 hours and like adults they pass through up to 5 REM cycles and they sleep during the day too. Again talking of sound sleep, I saw one Kumbhakarna guy sleeping right through a wedding like a log with the band in high octave (not his wedding, thank god). Unfortunately to them, a good number of the elderly are unable to do their full quota of sleep despite they need full amount of sleep like their children-- perhaps they have to rise in the nights to visit the toilet frequently.
It is an enigma why we have to sleep at all. But sleep is a must for the human body has to carry on its internal repairs, like cleaning, getting rid of the dead cells, rejuvenate its systems etc. Some sleep with pillows stacked high under head and shoulders, some others do without pillows. But my doctor advises I fold a small thin towel, make into a convenient lump to rest under my neck. That is a relief, he says, for spondylitis. Secondly, a friend advised me to lie on to my left side while sleeping. That way, he says, it would help my stomach empty its contents into the duodenum of the small intestines, in line with gravitational pull.
The daily siesta (afternoon nap) works wonders to keep our brain refreshed till the evening. A catnap in the office won’t hurt the doctors say; I heard some high tech offices started allowing their staff to officially snooze to increase general productivity. In other normal offices no wonder some sleep improvise sleeping in chairs with eyes wide open, staring blankly at the monitor or reading or scribbling in notebooks at the meetings. Often we hear about motor car accidents where the drivers are reportedly suffering from sleep backlogs. In that condition they are prone to get momentary lapse of consciousness, during when they loose control at the steering wheel.
We get our dreams during a cycle called Rapid Eye Moment stage. I used to wonder whether we really dream in colors or just in Black and White. Now it seems it is a settled matter we see events in our dreams in multicolor (maybe after the entry of color TVs). We get early morning dreams (most are sweet to me). I think we get dreams during all the REM rounds in the entire night but we could only remember clearly the dreams occurred during last REM cycle i.e. before we wake up. Those who had a peg too many may wake up to confusion and find their gaunt and ghastly faces staring back in their bathroom mirrors. That is due to lack of normal sleep cycles in their drunken doze. It is better to avoid booze and sleeping pills, and sleep normally like a baby to be healthy and fit for tomorrow.
Happy zzzzzzzzzing
